Acute Moist Pioderma or "Hot Spot"

Your four-legged friend has spent most of the day licking himself on the rump and you see a bald/bloody/pus infected area?  Do not worry, it is not dramatic.  Your dog has a "hot spot", or Acute Moist Pyoderma in medical terms.

Though not dramatic, the speed at which it develops is remarkable.  Left untreated, it can double every 24 hours.  Pooch is likely to intensify his licking and chewing due to the intense burning sensation which would only aggravate the problem.

As opposed to many other breeds, the Bernese has a dry skin (non-musky).  This means that your buddy will not feel wetness as much, but if the undercoat remains humid for an extended period of time, an infection can develop.  This is why it is crucial that you carefully dry your Bernese after a bath or a dip in water.

Alright, now what?

At the first signs, you must shave an area roughly 2 inches bigger all around the infected zone.  This will allow it to dry much faster.  The quicker you intervene, the sooner you can control the infection.  It would also be wise to administer appropriate antibiotics.

Treated appropriately, the wound will heal in less than a week and no signs of it will be left within a month or two! Don't worry...be happy !
