"A DOG IS FOR LIFE" - Below are some of the reasons dog owners have their pets put to sleep (complied by the SPCA). Read them over and then ask yourself if you are really ready to have a puppy.
- Loses too much hair.
- Barks.
- Nips.
- Jumps.
- Pulls on the leash.
- Digs.
- Has fleas.
- "Refuses" to be toilet-trained.
- Tracks dirt into the house.
- He was cute when he was a puppy but now he's too big.
- She spots everywhere when she's in heat.
- Breaks things in the house/makes noise when we're out.
- He's too perfect; he doesn't even bark.
- He's too big. I want a puppy now.
- I'm moving.
- I'm getting married.
- I just had a baby.
- We want to have children "someday."
- I'm getting divorced.
- I didn't know:
- A dog was so much work;
- Required so much attention;
- Needed so much exercise;
- Get so big;
- Eat so much.
- She's too aggressive! She didn't seem to mind when my son pulled her by the lip but now she's started to bite him.
- I surprised him in the kitchen (he wasn't doing anything wrong – he was just walking around).
- He looked at me and my girlfriend when we were on the sofa.
- I have a family reunion this summer and I've got to fix up the backyard, which is impossible with a dog.
- He's too stupid. No matter how many times we beat him, he just won't learn.
- He spends way too much time in front of the TV.
- When we let him out of his cage twice a day, he jumps on us and wants too much attention.
- My four cousins who visit once every five years can't stand him.
- We sold the truck we used to tie her to!
- My new husband doesn't want a dog.

- I trained her to be a guard dog. Now she tries to kill me.

- He doesn't defend himself. My husband beats him and the kids and the dog runs away (8 mth. old Rothweiler).
- She gets the bathroom dirty when I wash her.

- She was raped.
- He hunts all the time (hound, retriever).
- He doesn't hunt.
- He's afraid of guns. I only shot the gun off once over his head.
- Hyperactive.
- Bit my husband when he hit him for getting up on the sofa.
- Stole the baby's toys.
- Follows me all the time, even into the bathroom.
- Always wants to get patted.
- Watches me.
- Steals food off the counter.
- Takes my things.
